How to patch test a new skincare product

A patch test cannot guarantee that a product will suit your whole face, but it can reduce the chance of a widespread reaction. This is especially useful if your skin is sensitive or the formula contains an ingredient you have not used before.

A simple patch test

1. Follow the product label first.
2. Apply a small amount to a discreet area such as the inner forearm or behind the ear.
3. Leave it for the instructed time. For a leave-on product, repeat on the same small area over several days.
4. Stop if you notice persistent redness, swelling, itching, blistering or significant discomfort.

Introduce one product at a time

Adding several products together makes it difficult to identify what caused a problem. Keep the rest of your routine familiar for a few days, then introduce the next item.

Patch testing is not treatment

Do not test on broken or already irritated skin. If you have a known allergy, a skin condition or a strong reaction, seek advice from a qualified medical professional rather than trying the product again.
