Makeup expiry and storage in Indian heat

Makeup rarely has one obvious expiry date. Most packs use a small open-jar symbol marked 6M, 12M or 24M: that is the suggested period of use after opening. Heat, humidity and repeated contact with fingers can shorten it.

Typical use-after-opening windows

• Mascara and liquid eyeliner: about three to six months
• Liquid and cream complexion products: about twelve months
• Lip tint and gloss: roughly twelve to eighteen months
• Powder blush and eyeshadow: often eighteen to twenty-four months
• Perfume: usually several years when stored away from heat and light

The pack's own symbol and instructions take priority, because formulas differ.

Signs it is time to let a product go

A new smell, colour change, separation that no longer mixes, a gritty texture or irritation are better warnings than the calendar alone. Do not add water or oil to revive a formula; that can introduce contamination and upset its preservative system.

Storage that works in Indian weather

Keep products in a dry drawer or cupboard, away from a sunny window and steamy bathroom. Close caps firmly, use clean hands and avoid sharing products used directly around the eyes or lips. A normal cool room is enough for most makeup; the fridge can create condensation unless the label specifically recommends refrigeration.

Make it easy to remember

Write the month you opened a product on its base with a small label. Clean brushes and reusable applicators regularly, and replace an item sooner if its texture or smell changes.
