K-beauty, J-beauty and C-beauty: what's the difference?

6 August 2026 · 5 min read

They get lumped together as "Asian beauty", but the three have genuinely different priorities.

Korean beauty

Innovation and layering. K-beauty popularised the multi-step routine, sheet masks, cushion compacts and the "glass skin" look. Formulas move fast — new ingredients reach the shelf quickly, and packaging is playful. Skincare is treated as the main event and makeup as a light finish on top.

Japanese beauty

Restraint and consistency. J-beauty leans towards fewer, simpler steps done reliably, with a focus on cleansing and sun protection. Japanese sunscreens in particular are widely regarded as among the best-textured in the world. The aesthetic is quieter — clean skin rather than dewy skin.

Chinese beauty

Colour and drama. C-beauty is where the boldest makeup is coming from right now — pigment-heavy lip muds, ornate packaging, and looks built for short-form video. It is the tradition most driven by what trends on Douyin, which is where a lot of this catalogue comes from.

Which suits you

Most people end up mixing all three, which is entirely the point.
